Synopsis:

Sam Bell has a three year contract to work for Lunar Industries. For the contract's entire duration, he is the sole employee based at their lunar station. His primary job responsibility is to harvest and periodically rocket back to Earth supplies of helium-3, the current clean and abundant fuel used on Earth. There is no direct communication link available between the lunar station and Earth, so his only direct real-time interaction is with GERTY, the intelligent computer whose function is to attend to his day to day needs. With such little human contact and all of it indirect, he feels that three years is far too long to be so isolated; he knows he is beginning to hallucinate as the end of his three years approaches. All he wants is to return to Earth to be with his wife Tess and their infant daughter Eve, who was born just prior to his leaving for this job. With two weeks to go, he gets into an accident at one of the mechanical harvesters and is rendered unconscious. Injured, he awakens back at the station in the infirmary, he assumes assisted by GERTY. GERTY tells him that a rescue team named Eliza will come to the station to clean up the aftermath of the accident. After his recuperation, he takes an unauthorized trip back to the broken harvester, where he makes an unexpected discovery. Because of his find, he begins to doubt his sanity, then his true identity, then the company and GERTY's willingness to do what is best for him. Because of his resulting beliefs, his sole mission becomes how to get back to Earth on his own.

4 out of 5 stars Moon - A Nice Surprise   August 23, 2010

I really enjoyed this film a lot. I was worried that it was just going to be a re-working of the 70's film "Silent Running", but after the first 15 minutes or so you realize that this is a very different story. Sam Rockwell is great in the film as he pretty much has to carry the whole thing. As others have mentioned there are a few plot problems, the main one being why someone would be stationed all alone in a situation like this in the first place. Overall though I did not have too many issues with these things for the most part. I won't give any of the plot away, but if you like thoughtful science fiction that is not an action picture I would think you would like this.

Sam Rockwell has chosen to play some strange roles in his career, but here he really manages to carry an entire film on his narrow shoulders (though to some extent helped by the calm voice of Kevin Spacey). Sam (played by Sam) is all alone on the Moon, nearing the end of his three-year contract; his sole companion is Gerty, a super intelligent AI that controls the various functions on their shared Moon-base. Sam is feeling the effects of the several year long isolation (there is something wrong with the communication antennas on the base, so he can't 'call home', so to speak). Sam looks forward to returning home to his wife and daughter, all the while performing his work on the base and living on a day-to-day-basis. The film is very quiet and calm, almost soothing, and reminds one much of both Solaris and the more usual suspects of Clarke. Interestingly, after a while, the film takes a turn for the psychological as Sam starts to discover that not all is as it is supposed to be. He starts feeling ill, and that someone is watching his every move. Then, the film suddenly reminded me a lot of one of my favourite films: Vanilla Sky, and that says a lot! There is not much more I can say without potentially spoiling parts of it, so I'll just highly recommend it if you are a fan of either of the mentioned films, or just mystical science-fiction in general.

Beautiful landscapes, a great plot and not to mention impressive acting from those involved makes this one of the finest films to come out of 2009. Four point five stars, without a doubt.

Directed by: Duncan Jones
Starring: Sam Rockwell, Kevin Spacey
Running time: 97 min. R - 2009

The film "Moon" is sci fi psychological thriller that stars Sam Rockwell who has been contracted to work on the moon for three years. Along with a super computer (voiced by Kevin Spacey) Sam slowly becomes aware that his mission isn't what it seems to be. This movie offers enough twists and turns to keep you on the edge of you seat throughout despite the minimal cast. I definitely recommend this film and its worth a rental.

Good.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant   July 19, 2010

The character development is so strong that Sam Rockwell role has proved what a top level actor he is. This is one of those rare movies where you can connect with the character so much that you want him to be real, because while you're watching him he seems real. It's absolutely beautiful acting & writing.

The story is incredibly simple but it's presented in a way that it keeps unfolding itself throughout the entire movie. There is a twist, but the twist is early in the movie (which is rare). The rest of the movie is the character facing the reality of the twist, going through emotions & realizations that are gripping in a very subtle & true way.

This is not a thriller, it's not a movie you just watch for entertainment, it's very engaging. I cannot recommend it enough for people that enjoy quality story-telling.

5 out of 5 stars Moon Blue-ray is very good.   July 16, 2010

This was very good. It wasn't clear at the beginning where the plot would go. The ending was very surprising despite being very plausible. This was a nice surprise considering most SYFY have common plots. It is NOT a shoot-um-up show. It did keep me interested and was thought provoking. Bottom line I don't resent the money I spent, or the time spent watching it. I do recommend it for seasoned SYFY watchers.
